Mixxx is the leading free, open-source DJ software, developed by a global community of passionate contributors since 2001. It provides professional-level features without any cost, subscriptions, hardware locks, or vendor restrictions — making it one of the most important projects in DJ software history.

As an open-source project licensed under GPL v2, Mixxx is completely free to download, use, modify, and distribute. There are no premium tiers, no feature locks, no ads, and no data collection. This philosophy has made Mixxx the go-to choice for DJs who value freedom, privacy, and transparency, as well as those in educational settings, community radio stations, and developing countries where commercial DJ software costs are prohibitive.

Despite being free, Mixxx does not compromise on features. It offers 4-deck mixing with independent EQ, gain, and effects per deck. The effects engine includes a solid set of built-in effects (flanger, echo, reverb, filter, bitcrusher, etc.) that can be chained and customized. Beat detection, key detection, and automatic beat grid generation are accurate and reliable. Vinyl control (DVS) is supported through timecoded vinyl records, making Mixxx one of the few free options for turntablists.

Library management is robust, supporting multiple music directories, playlists, crates, smart playlists with auto-filtering, BPM and key-based browsing, cover art display, and iTunes/Traktor library import. The search functionality is fast even with large libraries of 100,000+ tracks.

Hardware support is excellent — Mixxx works with over 100 MIDI and HID controllers out of the box, including models from Pioneer DJ, Numark, Hercules, Denon DJ, Allen & Heath, and many more. The mapping system is powerful and well-documented, allowing users to create custom mappings for any MIDI device. The community maintains a growing library of user-contributed controller mappings.

Mixxx supports broadcasting via Shoutcast and Icecast protocols, enabling DJs to stream their mixes directly to internet radio stations. Recording is built-in with support for multiple audio formats. The software runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux — with the Linux version being particularly notable as it's one of the very few professional DJ applications available natively on Linux.

The project is actively developed with regular releases adding new features and improvements. Recent versions have introduced stem separation capabilities, improved effects, better controller support, and modernized UI elements. The Mixxx community is welcoming and active, with forums, Zulip chat, and comprehensive documentation for users and developers alike. For anyone wanting to learn DJ software development or contribute to the DJ community, Mixxx offers a unique opportunity to work on a real-world, widely-used application.
